The speaker introduced the relationship between disruptions of the environment and violations of human rights, which happens as a byproduct of the business extending processes of transnational companies. She also introduced the approaches of international law to preventing such illegal behaviors on the part of transnational companies. In particular, she looked at the role of the lawsuit—meaning a legal trial—in resolving these problems through one specific approach, the US legislation known as ATS (Alien Tort Statute). In addition, she also lectured on the possibility of international governance to reinforce the social responsibility of the transnational companies.
