Purpose

As People for Earth approaches its 10th anniversary, we organized this seminar for all members to read and discuss "The Universe Story," co-authored by cultural historian Thomas Berry and mathematical physicist Brian Swimme. Our Ecozoic Era Research Group, Earth Jurisprudence Society, and Biocracy Research Group have been guided by the concepts proposed by Thomas Berry. He wrote this book over 30 years ago when awareness of the ecological crisis was becoming urgent, with the clear purpose of creating a vision for a new community in the face of the challenges posed by humanity's ecological crisis. By revisiting "The Universe Story," we aimed to reflect on the vision and revitalization of creative activities within our small knowledge community, People for Earth, and to strengthen our knowledge base.

"The Universe Story" chronologically explores the birth of the universe, the Earth, life, and the emergence of humanity, based on evolution and scientific discoveries. It encourages reflection on where we come from, where we are going, who we are, and our role on Earth. In this era where the global geological crisis is becoming a reality, we critically examined the vision of the Ecozoic Era proposed in this book from our current position and discussed our direction. We anticipated that this seminar would provide a meaningful opportunity to appreciate the book, which integrates scientific achievements, humanity's long-standing spiritual traditions, and knowledge from the humanities and social sciences, share the authors' insights, and discuss concepts and contexts scientifically and historically. Furthermore, we hoped that it would be a meaningful reading experience not only for the knowledge community of People for Earth but also for the individual lives of our members.
